Alex Berko's orchestra piece, Among Waves wins a 2021 ASCAP Morton Gould Award.

A quick back story from Berko: "In high school, I became friends with a 92-year old woman named Dorothy. Dorothy was a resident at one of the nursing homes my dad worked at and I would visit her all the time to play piano and chat. One day, she mentioned to me that she had a friend who was a conductor from Spain. She later invited him to visit us and around 2013, we all met. A year later, I started college, but every time I came home, I would visit Dorothy. I also kept in touch with that conductor, Max Bragado-Darman. A few years ago, Max asked me to write a piece for his orchestra, Monterey Symphony. Dorothy passed away just before the premiere but I was able to play her a version of the piece before she left. The piece was dedicated to her and I'm sure she's smiling."
