Conductor History | Haymo Taeuber (1968-1985)

Austrian-born conductor Haymo Taeuber had been music director at the Calgary Philharmonic and the Vienna Boys' Choir. Taeuber recruited new players and lifted the professionalism of the institution. He supported the hiring of a full-time business manager. Other staff positions were soon added as the budget grew. Internationally acclaimed guest artists appeared on stage. The season grew to six subscription concerts. He revitalized the Monterey Peninsula Choral Society, performed concerts in South County, and created the In School Demonstration Program. For his seventeen-year-long tenure, Taeuber served the community with great dedication. Both the youth orchestra and chorus became separately incorporated.

Upon his retirement, the Association selected music director candidates and invited them to audition. During this season, deep divisions arose among the musicians and the board of directors as to how the music director should be selected.
