There's a lot of artwork depicting birds – they're beautiful animals. Birds are also key players in diverse ecosystems. Plus, they're just cool to observe in nature. The science and art of birds converge in this workshop, led by artist Carolyn Monastra. The day starts with a one-mile birdwatching walk at Carmel River State Beach, guided by Monterey Audubon Society members. Then back at the Center for Photographic Art, Monastra presents on her conceptual art project, "Divergence of Birds," aiming to inspire advocacy for these remarkable creatures. Then the art-making is up to participants, who will be invited to choose a climate-threatened bird from the region, then make an accordion pop-up book-in-a-tin using ephemera and other recycled materials.
