BACK TO NEWS RELEASES MONTEREY SYMPHONY WILL PRESENT INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED GUITARIST ANGEL ROMERO IN RODRIGO’S CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ WITH MAX BRAGADO-DARMAN CONDUCTING, MARCH 15, 16, AND 17, 2007 February 7, 2008, Carmel, California: On March 15, 16, and 17, 2008, the Monterey Symphony, under the baton of its music director Max Bragado-Darman will present Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Poulenc’s delightful Sinfonietta, and Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez featuring guitarist Angel Romero. This performance has been sponsored, in part, by Rabobank. Single tickets for the Saturday, March 15, 8:00 p.m. performance at Salinas’ Sherwood Hall are $38, $28, $18 and $16 students. For the Stage Door Performance at 3:00 p.m. (final rehearsal) tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Single tickets for the Sunday, March 16, 3:00 p.m. and Monday, March 17, 8:00 p.m. concerts at Carmel’s Sunset Theater are $60, $55, $50, $45, and $35—not including Sunset Center’s Facility Use Fee. Call 831-624-8511 extension "0," for exact seat locations. Born on August 17, 1946 in Málaga, Spain, Angel Romero is one of the world’s leading classical guitarist. He is a former member of the guitar quartet, Los Romeros, and is the youngest son of Celedonio Romero, who in 1957 left Franco's Spain for the United States with his family. Angel Romero made his professional debut at the age of six, and his United States debut at sixteen. In addition to his performance career, Mr. Romero studied conducting with Eugene Ormandy, the long-time music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed as a soloist with such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the New World Symphony, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has also conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Royal Philharmonic, Germany’s NDR Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Symphoniker, the Beijing Philharmonic, the Euro-Asia Philharmonic, the Shanghai Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Orquesta de Baja California, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the San Diego Symphony and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has made highly acclaimed recordings for Delos International, RCA Victor Red Seal and RCA Victor Worldwide, Telarc and Angel/EMI. In February 2000, he was presented with the Grand Cross of Isabel la Catolica (the highest honor that can be offered in Spain), and was knighted for his musical accomplishments. In 2007, he was honored by the Recording Academy, producer of the Grammy Awards, with the Recording Academy President’s Merit Award. He has also been involved in the film industry. In 1989, he performed the score for The Milagro Bean Field War, directed by Robert Redford. In 1994, he composed and directed the musical score for Bienvenido-Welcome, a film by Gabriele Retes, for which he won the 1995 ARIEL (the "Academy Award" of Mexico). He also performed and recorded the score for By The Sword composed by Bill Conti, and played a cameo role in Bound by Honor, a Taylor Hackford film. Angel Romero appeared with the Monterey Symphony as a member of the Romero Quartet in 1976 and in again 1982 with Haymo Taeuber conducting. Copland’s Appalachian Spring was last performed by the orchestra in May of 1991 with Clark Suttle conducting. The orchestra performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez in 1995 as part of its 50th Anniversary Season. The Monterey Symphony, under the artistic leadership of Max Bragado, is the only fully-professional orchestra serving the communities of the Monterey Bay, Salinas, Salinas Valley, Big Sur, and San Benito County. It provides triple performances of a seven-concert subscription series at Carmel’s Sunset Theater and Salinas’ Sherwood Hall, annual holiday concerts, and an extensive youth activities program, including more than 200 visits to classrooms by musicians, which culminates in concerts by the full orchestra for school children.
