Alvin Drive, Salinas on Saturday, April 5, 6:00 p.m. and at St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 303 Hillcrest Avenue, Marina on Sunday, April 6, 3:00 p.m. In addition, a special Korean-menu dinner will take place after the Saturday performance at Ikebana Restaurant, 1315 N. Tickets for the dinner at Ikebana Restaurant or for the Marina performance can be purchased at 831-624-8511 extension 0 or visit: www.montereysymphony.org. The program includes works by Mozart, Mercadante, and Brahms, as well as traditional works for the Korean zither and drum. These performances have been underwritten, in part, by a generous grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. Flutist/piccolo player Kyoung Hee Park Uhm has been a tenured member of the Monterey Symphony since 1985. Born in South Korea, Kyoung Hee was a child star who was given the role of a character who played the flute. She took some initial flute lessons to help her acting and then decided that she would rather continue studying music than acting. She has served in several musical capacities in the San Francisco Bay area and has been very involved in American Korean Community affairs. Violinist Tina Minn has been a tenured member of Monterey Symphony since 1998. Tina was born in the United States but has kept close ties with the Korean Community. Violinist Sue-mi Yoo joined the Monterey Symphony in 2004. Me Sook Ko is a gifted artist performing as a dancer and as a janggo player. The janggo is the traditional double-headed Korean drum. Myung Soon Kim is a master of the gayageum, or Korean zither. Selected by group leader Tina Minn, the following fellow Monterey Symphony players will supplement the instrumental works: violists Chad Kaltinger and Charith Premawardhana, and cellist Shain Carrasco. The Monterey Symphony, under the artistic leadership of Max Bragado, is the only fully-professional orchestra serving the communities of the Monterey Bay, Salinas, Salinas Valley, Big Sur, and San Benito County. It provides triple performances of a seven-concert subscription series at Carmel’s Sunset Theater and Salinas’ Sherwood Hall, annual holiday concerts, and an extensive youth activities program, including more than 200 visits to classrooms by musicians, which culminates in concerts by the full orchestra for school children. The Monterey Symphony is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation, supported, in part, through the fundraising efforts of the Friends of the Monterey Symphony; and grants from The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, The Harden Foundation, The Robert and Virginia Stanton Fund at the Community Foundation for Monterey County, The William and Flora Hewlitt Foundation, The Monterey Peninsula Foundation, The James Irvine Foundation, The General Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County, The Chapman Foundation, The Communities Advancing the Arts Initiative of the Community Foundation of Monterey County, The McGraw-Hill Companies, The Nunes Company, Upjohn California Fund, and many other generous foundations and individual donors. The next performances by the Monterey Symphony will take place on April 19, 20, and 21.
