![]() MISSION STATEMENT
To engage, educate, and excite VISION STATEMENT
The Monterey Symphony produces
and presents the best musical programs, educational activities and
community events possible to engage people of the Central
Coast and the Salinas Valley in the continual discovery of symphonic
music.
We invest in deepening
the musical experience for our current patrons, identifying and
recruiting more individuals who share their characteristics, and
diversifying the ethnic and socioeconomic composition of our
audience.
We perform major works
by great composers, lesser-known works by them and their
contemporaries, works by living composers and popular music that
uses symphonic instrumentation. We perform music that has both
public appeal and intellectual merit. We often select repertoire in
our patrons’ “comfort zone,” as well as actively seeking ways to
enlarge that zone. We provide advance materials and information
which enable our patrons to enhance their concert-going experience.
We engage guest
artists who illuminate the music through their interpretive skills
and virtuosity.
We monitor our
traditional concert halls making sure that the concert experience
for both performers and audience meets optimal standards. We present
innovative experiences in the concert hall through electronic media
and technological advances. We also perform in non-traditional
settings.
We embrace our role as
music educator for lifelong learning, offering programs for
elementary and secondary schools, college students, young
professionals and families as well as more traditional audiences. We
address the very real needs of the communities we serve in many
ways, including assisting professional music educators in training
young musicians, providing structured and meaningful exposure to
symphonic music for elementary and secondary students and providing
guidance to and programs for ethnic communities highlighting their
musical traditions.
We are distinguished
by four features: the continuous pursuit of the highest artistic and
organizational quality, fiscal responsibility, innovation, and
partnership. We operate openly, accurately, and effectively. We make
informed choices from collected data. We strive for transparency
consistent with standard business and accounting practices. We
securely protect personal information and transactions.
We use contemporary
technology to achieve our artistic, musical, educational,
communication, and business objectives. We stay current through
active engagement in state and national orchestra service
organizations as well as local business and industry groups.
We are part of the
communities we serve. We actively seek partners committed to the
improvement of the quality of life in these communities, especially
partners that share our passion for the power of music. VALUES STATEMENT
The guiding principles for the
conduct of the Monterey Symphony’s board of directors, staff,
musicians, and volunteers that shape our relationship with the
community are listed below.
We appreciate our extended
symphony family—donors, stakeholders, ticket buyers and musicians—for
all they contribute to the orchestra’s success. We treasure the beauty
of music and the orchestra performing it. We are committed to achieving
our mission, implementing our vision for the future and conducting our
activities in the spirit of these values. We foster a spirit of
cooperation in all we do. We make working for the orchestra fun for
everyone.
We express our gratitude
for the generosity of those we serve who offer their time, talent,
intellect, and money to the achievement of our mission. We engage our
audiences through innovative programming. We use innovations to advance
the development and decision-making of our board and the effectiveness
of our staff. We encourage loyalty of the musicians, board directors and staff to the symphony association, the community and each other. We respect the opinions of others and seek to find common ground when differing opinions are expressed. We strive for selflessness and service to the symphony association and the community. We conduct our activities with a high degree of transparency, openness and clarity, being inclusive rather than exclusive in decision-making. We trust each other in our deliberations and work together cooperatively. |
