The Monterey Symphony is seeking original scores for an Overture from composers of all ages, who live or work in Monterey County. The premiere performance will take place on March 21, 22, and 23, 2009. Also on the program are Brahms’ Double Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6, “Pathetique.” The winner will receive an honorarium of $1,500. Max Bragado is the sole adjudicator. Mr. Bragado wants the music to speak for itself and does not wish to know the composer's name prior to his decision. The Symphony office will submit to Mr. Bragado only the completed score and an electronic representation.
Submissions must meet the following qualifications in order to be considered.
1. The work must be original music which fulfills the requirements inherent in a composition entitled, "Overture."2. The work must not exceed five minutes in duration. It should be scored for the following instruments, or fewer:
3. Submitted conductor’s scores must be clearly
legible and professionally annotated. All participants must be
willing to prepare similar individual parts for the required instruments at
their own expense. These parts must
be proofread and ready to be sent to the players by January 16, 2008.
4. Score reviews will begin on January 5, 2009. Final Submission deadline is January 12, 2009.
5. All submitted scores must contain the following:
A cover letter containing: the title of the work, name of the composer, a brief biography,
composer’s address in Monterey County,
telephone number and/or email address.
Title of the Work and Page Number on Each Page of the Score.

6. The winning composer must appear at all
rehearsals and performances and be available beforehand to consult
with Max Bragado and the orchestra librarian.
7. The winning composer must be prepared to discuss
his or her work in various public forums and provide the
Monterey Symphony with a photograph and biography.
8. The Monterey Symphony cannot pay any additional
fees for the presentation of the winning Overture nor make
any reimbursements for costs related to the preparation of the score and
individual parts.
