Dvorak: Symphony No.9 in E minor, Op.95, "from the New World"
and all that jazz!

Legendary Musician Dave Brubeck pays tribute to a legendary photographer, Ansel Adams. The Monterey Symphony is proud to be among an elite group of symphony orchestras that commissioned Brubeck and his son Chris Brubeck to compose this great work. Sixty photographic masterpieces will be projected above the orchestra as the musicians perform the music of the master. Both back by popular demand, soprano Tracy Dahl and conductor Arthur Post work together for the first time. Tracy's exceptionally high and beautiful voice is a rare jewel. It's certain to sparkle in these arias she personally selected for their rare beauty. Her stage presence electrified the audience in 2008 and will certainly be a sensation in 2009. Arthur Post's experiences with several American orchestras including those in Pittsburgh, Durango, and Richmond, Virginia make him a versatile orchestra leader. Don't miss this exceptional opportunity to hear some very thrilling music, exquisitely performed.

Exciting violinist Judith Ingolfsson is breaking attendance records wherever she performs. Her combination of natural talent, profound musicality, technical mastery and beautiful stage presence will long be remembered. Known best for its prominent oboe solo, Rossini's La scala di seta Overture is pure joy. Beethoven's First Symphony is one of his most exciting early works. It's a concert not to be missed. (This program represents a change from a previously published one.)

Returning to conduct the Monterey Symphony eleven years after his debut with us, Dmitry Yablonsky has led prestigious orchestras throughout Europe and Asia  including the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Last year, Dmitry won a Grammy nomination for his recording of the Miklos Rosza Violin Concerto. His discography is extensive and popular. He is also one of the finest cellists of his generation performing the great concertos, chamber music, and recitals.

Highly regarded for her devotion to classical and popular music, Sara Buechner's special touch will make this performance of Gershwin's music one of the highlights of the season. Miss Buechner has also agreed to perform Turina's delightful yet rarely performed Rapsodia sinfónia. Elgar's Cockaigne Overture paints a delightful picture of Edwardian London while Ginastera's popular Estancia Suite evokes the charm of the Argentine countryside. (This is change from the originally announced program.)

Schubert: Gesang der Geister uber den Wassern*  
Brahms: Serenade No.2 in A major, Op.16*
Faure: Requiem, Op.48
One of the most creative programs recently presented, each of these great works uses only the low strings. Schubert's genius comes through this beautiful work for male voices can be translated as "The Song of the Spirits over the Waters." Brahms delightful Serenades have charmed audiences since their first introduction. Fauré's endearing music so poetically captures the content of the Liturgical Text for a Mass for the Dead.

Long recognized as one of the finest musicians of our time, the legendary Gary Graffman ascends our stages to perform a unique work in the repertoire, Ravel's Concerto for the Left Hand only. Max Bragado says goodbye to the season with works by Rodrigo and Turina, and Ravel's boldly sensuous Bolero.
