As a Gold Award Recipient, the Monterey Symphony has established a full suite of family friendly policies and practices that benefit their employees, business, and community.

DEI STATEMENT

The Monterey Symphony is embarking on a learning journey around the principals of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a commitment to understanding our institutional role in addressing racial equity. We recognize that each person, organization, and community we serve is unique. We do not pretend to understand the cultural needs of each of the communities we serve, but we seek to understand them. As an organization, we define our own culture as inclusive, supportive, creative, and open. We will work towards consensus building around diversity, equity and inclusion and allow interactions and conversations to be learning opportunities.

As such, we will:

  • Examine the make-up of our staff and board, with an eye towards hiring and recruiting practices that will amplify diversity. 
  • Examine our programming model with a focus on inclusion. 
  • Partner with other organizations that find themselves on the same or different learning journey and support their work. 
  • Provide anti-racism and bias training to staff, board, and musicians. 
  • Mentor diverse individuals who are seeking careers in music and arts management. 
  • Adapt our external language and communications with sensitivity towards race, sexual orientation, disability, and gender identity. 
  • Recognize that this is a living and organic commitment that should be examined annually. 
  • Recognize that we are constantly learning and absorbing new ways of doing things, including analyzing past decisions that have contributed to bias and marginalization. 
  • Actively commit to a community engagement program that focuses on education, breaking down barriers, and supporting innovative and inclusive programming.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Monterey Symphony recognizes that we gather on the traditional lands of those who we know to today as the Costanoan, Rumsen and Ohlone people (modern words). We recognize, honour and respect these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and water on which Carmel is now present. Acknowledging them reminds us of our important connection to this land where we live, learn and work. And, we recognize and honor that we are making art and music here and we endeavor to be grateful for the opportunity.
