Monterey Symphony

Listening Opportunities

It is our hope that your students will be familiar with the music they will hear at the concert. To that end a CD containing all the music, which will be preformed at the Youth Concerts, is enclosed.

There are many opportunities throughout the day for students to hear the music.  You might want to play the CD at one of the following times:

·        A series of regularly scheduled “listening” periods during which no other activity will distract their attention. Keep these sessions brief and you won’t have to plan concurrent activities, or

·        As students are coming into the classroom at various times of the day---in the morning, from recess or lunch break.

·        While students are working quietly on math or doing sustained silent reading.

·        For journal writing---See the list of Listening follow up activities.

·        After playing piece 5,6, or 8 ask the students to name the instruments that they heard.  Then tell them that they will be able to see if they are correct when they are at the concert.

Do be careful in your choice of music some pieces may not be appropriate for quiet activities time.
